Fargo Race Recap. Highs and lows. December 18 2014 1 Comment
Well the snow dust has settled and I wanted to let you guys in on how the weekend at Fargo went for rounds 3 and 4 of Amsoil Championship Snocross series. Heading into the weekend I was riding the high coming off a huge weekend at Duluth where I went 2-2 for the weekend. Friday at BRRP in Fargo went pretty well. I went 1-1 in qualifying and was 2nd qualifier behind Tucker Hibbert. However, I just wasn't feeling super comfortable on my sled. The Fargo track was probably the roughest track I've been on. The rhythm section was more like an apocalyptic crater field! It was very different from Duluth or the practice tracks I typically train on.
In the final I didn't get a good start and was mid pack. After a few laps I knew I had to pick it up to get back up with the top 3 guys so I went for a line through the back rhythm section that no one was doing, but it don’t go well and I was catapulted off. From there on I was in catch up mode and then tried tripling through that same section and bounced my chin off the bars really hard and had to get 11 stitches after the race. It was tough way to end an otherwise good day.
After Friday nights final, the crew and I went back to the trailer to work out the suspension and found a great setup. During practice on Saturday I actually had the fastest lap time, which was a huge confidence boost for me. Saturday they switched to a 2 heat format vs 3 heats the night before, which made gate picks crucial. For whatever reason, I just wasn't on my game during qualifying and barely made the front row of the final with a 5th in heat one and a 6th in heat 2.
When the light went green I got a decent holeshot and was about 4th through the first couple turns. That was pretty much the story for the night and stayed mid pack for the rest of the race. I just had a tough time finding good flow out there and finished 7th for the night.
I'm really looking forward to Shakopee on January 9th at Canterbury Park. I learned a lot from the Fargo race and I'am working hard to address those short comings, leverage the good things and get back on the box! Over the break I’ll be doing lots of practicing, hopefully some free-riding and spending time with family and friends over Christmas.
For those of you who want to learn to race or just be a better rider, I'll be coaching at the ERX Learn-to-Ride Clinic on December 30th. It's a super fun day of one-on-one coaching with some of the worlds best snocross racers. You can get more details here. And it's not too late to register.
I can't thank every one of you enough for your support! I hope to see you all at Shakopee! It's one of the best venues on the series.
